Church Litten
Church Litten park in Newport is an unassuming place, often hurried through without consideration but, if you look closely, it retains a few mementos from its more macabre history. Originally a space for archery practice, the space was consecrated in 1583 when an outbreak of the plague killed hundreds of the town's 1300 residents. It became the churchyard of nearby St. Thomas's and, for three centuries, generations of Newport's inhabitants were interred there until the last burial in 1897, when the gates were finally locked. In the 1940s the railings were removed in the drive for scrap metal to aid the war effort and in the 1950s the headstones were cleared away. Today, surrounded by the sound of children playing and traffic rumbling into town, a headstone or two are propped to one side, the old stone arch still stands guard at the former entrance and the dead still lie beneath as the living come and go. These ghosts are printed using leaves from Church Litten.
Our large ghost figurines measure approximately 8cm tall and are hand-made with care on the Isle of Wight thought to be the most haunted island in the world. Each ghost is completely unique and features an Isle of Wight shaped base and comes with a story card. Matt finish. Please note that by virtue of the hand-making and finishing process, minor imperfections and colour variations may be present. These are normal and add to the character of each spirit, with each one being a true one-of-a-kind.
