Invaded and claimed as Vectis in 43 AD, the Romans left a significant mark across the Island, with several villas in both Newport and Brading surviving to this day. In 2003, a dog walker took to Brading Down, set above the Roman villa, on a bright winter's morning when something unexpected caught his eye. Walking alongside him, seemingly unaware of his presence, was what appeared to be a lone soldier in a Roman uniform. Able to observe flashes of wine-coloured cloth, brown leather and brass, the figure strode for a time before fading against the picturesque landscape. This would not be the last time he was seen and seemingly, he may still be on the march across the Downs with the rest of his comrades...
